According to news reports, two people have tested positive for legionella and one of those infected has died.
The Albany County Department of Health has launched an investigation at the Promenade at University Place Assisted Living & Memory Care facility, located in upstate New York. The exact cause of death has not been released but legionella is transmitted by breathing in water containing the bacteria. It is not, however, spread from person to person but it can result in pneumonia, particularly for elderly individuals or those with pre-existing conditions or compromised immune systems.
