What Glycol System Service Covers

Glycol system service is the testing, cleaning, filling, and replacement that keeps a glycol loop protected and running at the right concentration. Glycol is the fluid that gives a closed HVAC or chiller loop its freeze protection and steady heat transfer, and it only does that job while its inhibitors and percentage are held in range.

Left unmanaged, glycol breaks down. The corrosion inhibitors deplete, the fluid turns acidic, and the loop starts to corrode from the inside. Tower Water manages the whole cycle so the fluid keeps doing its job. For the full background on the fluid itself, see our guide on what glycol is and how it works.

Why Glycol Systems Need Regular Service

Glycol does not last forever. The corrosion inhibitors blended into it are consumed over time, and once they run low the fluid stops protecting the metal it touches. A loop running on depleted glycol corrodes faster, drops in heat-transfer efficiency, and grows the kind of biological fouling that clogs strainers and heat exchangers.

Concentration matters just as much. Too little glycol and the loop loses freeze protection through the coldest months. Too much and it pumps poorly and transfers heat worse. The only way to know where a system stands is to test it, which is why service is built around regular glycol lab testing. The early warning signs show up in the data long before they show up as a failure, and we cover them in our guide to the symptoms of glycol system failure.

Our Glycol System Process

Every glycol job is a custom project, supervised start to finish. There are no off-the-shelf solutions. Here is how Tower Water runs it.

1

Testing and Assessment

We run full glycol testing, up to 21 parameters, to identify the type of glycol, its percentage, the inhibitor levels, and any contamination. That baseline tells us whether the loop needs a top-off, a correction, or a full replacement.

2

Drain Down and Disposal

When fluid needs replacing, we drain the system and dispose of the old glycol properly. This is the step that keeps a glycol job from turning into an environmental problem.

3

System Cleaning and Flush

We clear out corrosion by-products and biological fouling before any new fluid goes in. Filling a dirty system just contaminates the fresh glycol, so the loop gets cleaned first.

4

Mixing and Filling

We create the proper mixture on site and fill to the target concentration, usually 25 to 30 percent depending on the freeze protection the building needs. Jobs range from a few gallons of supplemental piping to complete systems taking a hundred drums or tanker delivery.

5

Verification

We confirm the type and percentage of glycol in the filled system and adjust up or down until it is exactly where it should be. The fluid is only right when the numbers say so.

6

Monitoring and Documentation

We schedule follow-up checks, top off inhibitors when needed, and keep a written record of every visit. One team, one point of contact, one service history. This is a managed program, not a one-time fill.

Glycol for Chillers and Closed Loops

Most of the glycol we manage runs in chiller plants and closed HVAC loops, where it carries cooling or heating between equipment without freezing in winter. These systems are sealed, so problems stay hidden until a test or a failure brings them to light.

That is exactly why a managed program fits glycol so well. Regular testing catches inhibitor loss and concentration drift early, while the fix is still a top-off rather than a teardown. For more on the role glycol plays in a cooling loop, see our guide on what glycol does in cooling systems, and our broader HVAC water treatment work.

How Often Should Glycol Be Tested and Replaced?

Most glycol loops should be tested at least once a year, and more often for critical systems. Replacement is driven by the test results, not the calendar. Glycol gets replaced when its inhibitors are spent or contamination shows up, not on a fixed schedule.

Good glycol can last many years when it is monitored and topped up. Neglected glycol can fail in a fraction of that time. We set a testing schedule that fits the system and keep the fluid in range between visits. Our guide on how to maintain a glycol water system walks through what that looks like.

What Strong Glycol Management Delivers

A managed glycol program protects three things that matter to the people who run the building.

🧊

Freeze Protection

The right concentration keeps coils and piping safe through the coldest stretch of winter.

🛡️

Corrosion Control

Maintained inhibitors keep the loop from corroding itself from the inside out.

📊

Documented Testing

Every result and top-off sits in one record, so the fluid is never a guess.

Common Questions About Glycol Systems

What is glycol used for in an HVAC system?

Glycol gives a closed HVAC or chiller loop freeze protection and stable heat transfer, so the system can move heating or cooling without the fluid freezing in winter. For a full explanation, see our guide on what glycol is.

How often should glycol be tested and replaced?

Test at least once a year, and more often for critical systems. Replacement is driven by the results, not the calendar. Glycol is replaced when its inhibitors are depleted or contamination appears, which monitoring catches early.

What is the right glycol concentration?

Most systems run between 25 and 30 percent, depending on how much freeze protection the building needs. Too little loses protection, too much hurts flow and heat transfer. We test and adjust to the correct level.

Ethylene or propylene glycol, which does my system use?

Both are common. Propylene glycol is used where lower toxicity matters, and ethylene glycol where heat-transfer performance is the priority. Our testing identifies which is in your loop so any fill matches it.

Do you offer ongoing glycol management programs?

Yes. We work on managed service agreements with scheduled testing, top-offs, and full documentation. We are a service partner, not a chemical supplier, so glycol is managed as a program rather than sold by the drum.

Cleaning and filling a glycol system is not a do-it-yourself job. It takes testing, proper mixing, safe disposal, and records that show the fluid is doing its job.

Tower Water runs glycol as part of the same managed approach we bring to the rest of a building’s water, so your loop can sit alongside your water treatment and filtration under one team and one service record.
